✂️✅ How to Split and Merge Line Features in QGIS
🟡 Part 1: Split a Line Feature
Step 1: Enable Editing Mode
- 
Right-click on the line layer → Toggle Editing 
 or click the ✏️ Pencil icon
Step 2: Use the Split Features Tool
- 
Go to: Edit→Split Features
 or click the ✂️ Split Features tool from the toolbar.
- 
Click to draw a cutting line across the line you want to split: - 
Click to start, click again to add vertices 
- 
Right-click to finish drawing the cut line 
 
- 
- 
The original line is now split into two (or more) parts. 
Step 3: Save Edits
- 
Click 💾 Save Layer Edits 
🔗 Part 2: Merge (Join) Line Features
Step 1: Enable Editing Mode
- 
Same as above: Right-click → Toggle Editing 
Step 2: Select the Lines to Merge
- 
Use the Select Features tool to select two or more connected line features. 
- 
Selected lines should be touching or overlapping at endpoints. 
Step 3: Use the Merge Selected Features Tool
- 
Go to: Edit→Merge Selected Features
 or Right-click →Merge Features
- 
A dialog will appear asking how to handle attribute fields. - 
Choose which values to keep or combine 
- 
Click OK 
 
- 
Step 4: Save and Exit Editing
- 
Click 💾 Save Layer Edits 
- 
Click ✏️ Toggle Editing to stop editing. 
✅ Notes:
- 
Split is useful for dividing roads, rivers, or pipelines at intersections or boundaries. 
- 
Merge is best used when combining segments into one logical feature (e.g., a continuous road or path).
