QGIS – Basics (Free Course)

🖥️✅ QGIS Interface Overview (Beginner’s Guide)

When you open QGIS, you’ll see several key components. Each plays an important role in managing and analyzing GIS data.

🟢 1. Menu Bar

Located at the top, it includes dropdown menus like:

  • Project – create, save, open projects

  • Layer – add vector/raster layers, create new shapefiles

  • View – control toolbars, panels, and full-screen view

  • Settings – customize interface, snapping options

  • VectorRasterDatabasePlugins, etc.

🧠 Think of it like the control center for all tools.

🟢 2. Toolbars

Just below the menu bar. These provide quick access buttons for frequently used tools like:

  • Add Layer

  • Zoom In/Out

  • Pan Map

  • Select Features

  • Toggle Editing

  • Identify Tool

  • Measure Distance/Area

🎯 You can customize or hide/show toolbars using View → Toolbars.

🟢 3. Layers Panel

Usually on the left side. It shows all loaded map layers (vector/raster):

  • Turn layers on/off

  • Reorder layers

  • Change symbology

  • Group layers

  • Right-click for options like “Zoom to Layer”, “Export”, “Properties”

🔍 Acts like a table of contents for your map.

🟢 4. Map Canvas

At the center, this is your main workspace.

  • Displays your map layers visually

  • You can zoom, pan, and explore features

📌 This is where most interaction with the map happens.

🟢 5. Browser Panel

On the left or bottom, it allows you to:

  • Browse and add data from your local drive or databases

  • Quickly drag files (like shapefiles, rasters, CSV) into your map

📁 Like a mini file explorer inside QGIS.

🟢 6. Attribute Table

  • Right-click a layer → Open Attribute Table

  • View and edit data in tabular form (rows = features, columns = attributes)

  • Perform selection, filtering, sorting, and calculations

🧾 Think of it like Excel for your map data.

🟢 7. Status Bar

At the bottom, it shows:

  • Mouse pointer coordinates (in current CRS)

  • Map scale

  • Render status

  • Coordinate reference system (click to change CRS)

🔎 Helpful for getting spatial info quickly.

🟢 8. Processing Toolbox (optional but powerful)

  • Go to Processing → Toolbox to open

  • Access 100s of GIS tools like Buffer, Clip, Raster Calculator, etc.

  • Includes tools from QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, SAGA, etc.

🧰 It’s the engine room of geospatial analysis.

🟢 9. Layer Styling Panel

  • Allows you to change color, transparency, labels, classification, etc.

  • Open it from View → Panels → Layer Styling

🎨 Use it to make your maps look informative and beautiful.
